Cardiff, UK – 19 March 2021
A religious and conservative Portuguese mum trying to reconnect with her gay porn star son; a season in the life of a Ukrainian female footballer as she suffers a devastating loss; and a story of an eccentric English piano tuner who delivers a piano to one of the most isolated settlements in the world are some of the standout films that will be shown as part of the Wales International Documentary Festival this year.
Now in its fourth year, The Wales International Documentary Festival (WIDF) is the only specialist documentary festival in Wales and will be held in Cardiff between 7-10 May 2019.
In the last few years, the festival has succeeded in bringing filmmakers of high stature from all over the world to Wales and establishing itself as a filmmaker-friendly, boutique festival with an international focus.
WIDF Cretaive Director Dave Evans said: “All our films this year are going to make audiences in Wales think differently about the world in some way. It's also an opportunity for new and emerging film makers from Wales to showcase their films to cinema audiences in an international context."
During the week there will screenings at Chapter and Tramshed and pop-up events across the city. There will also be a BAFTA Cymru event discussing women’s role in film and an S4C event looking at co-productions.
This year's line-up of films also includes Radio 1 DJ Huw Stevens’ film that looks back at 50 years of Welsh language music in Anorac, and an inspiring film about one woman’s heroic battle to tackle heroin addiction in Afghanistan in Laila at the Bridge.
Brazilian film Kaiser tells the unlikely and unbelievable story greatest footballer never to have played the game, while Spanish doc Goodbye Ringo takes us back to the golden age of Spaghetti Westerns and hears from those responsible for a type of cinema that no longer exists.
Dave Evans adds: “We're excited to be screening such an exciting line up of films this year. It's never been more difficult to make a choice from the hundreds of submissions and the selected films all offer an opportunity for Welsh audiences to see some of the most innovative, thought provoking contemporary docs from around the world"
